What is commonly not covered in homeowner’s insurance policies?

There are many aspects of owning a house that are very attractive to people which is why so many people in Washington choose to buy houses. People like having a home which they do not share with anyone else and they are free to do with it what they want. They can also be good investments as well. However, they can also be costly. As any homeowner is aware there are many different things that can go wrong and many repairs need to be made.

Many of these repairs are relatively small and can be done relatively cheaply. However, some repairs can cost thousands of dollars. This is why people purchase homeowner’s insurance policies so they will not be stuck paying for the major repairs caused by various events out of their control. While homeowner’s insurance does cover many different damage, it does not necessarily cover all types of damages. Most standard insurance policies have various exclusions.

Common exclusions from homeowner’s insurance

Many homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flood damage and other forms of water damage. They also do not generally cover earthquakes or sink holes. Damages caused by a lack of care for the home are not usually covered either. So, things like mold, rust, rotted wood, rodent or termite damage and other damages that could be prevented by routine maintenance and care are excluded. Some hidden defects and mechanical failures are also excluded.

All of these types of damage can still be very costly for people living in Washington though. It is important that people understand their insurance policies and know what is covered and not covered. Sometimes the damage can be categorized in different ways though and damages that the insurance company may claim are not covered are in fact covered. In these situations, it is important that the insurance companies pay for the damages. Experienced attorneys understand insurance policies and may be a useful resource for people going through one of these disputes.
